Beef production in Argentina is
based on grazing natural grassland and cultivated
pastures, providing processed foods or concentrated only
for short periods of time when nutrients provided by the
pastures are insufficient to meet the requirements of
the animals.
Argentina has different agro-ecological farming regions
that differ in their potential for pasture production
and quality of these, so there is also a regional
distribution of livestock activities. The Pampas region
with 57% of the national stock raising activity
concentrated in areas with higher soil limitations and
the activity of rearing and fattening in the soils most
suitable for agriculture in rotation with agriculture.
In regions extrapampeanas the main activity is farming,
and most of the calves produced are taken to the rearing
and fattening areas of the Pampas. But in recent years
due to the reduced availability of land because of the
expansion of soybean cultivation, part of the calves
produced in the regions extrapampeanas are rearing and
fattened in the same region. This rearing and finishing
are accomplished through pasture supplementation with
cereal grains or poultry in confinement of very short
duration.
